Not Rock On

Vor Kurzem habe ich auf einer amerikanischen Seite einen Beitrag zu Madsen gesehen, der auf mein Blog verlinkt war. Dem konnte ich hinsichtlich der Texte weiterhelfen. Ich habe dadurch allerdings auch erfahren, dass Madsen am 5. Juli in Lüchow spielen werden. Außerdem dabei 2 Laid, Herrenmagazin und DJ Stefan Blanck. Ob allerdings der Busbahnhof so stimmungsvoll sein wird? Ich hoffe, dass ich es trotzdem dahin schaffe.

Wie ich gerade sehe, feiert Lüchow dieses Jahr 850 Jahre! Hier gibt es weitere Info!

Madsen is a great band from the Wendland, my place of birth. They will soon be playing there again. I already have my ticket for only 9 Euro for their concert in Lüchow on July 05. You can find out more and some videos at Madsen's page and some more in my previous post .

After being a member of Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft or DAF for years, Gabi Delgado-Lopez decided that maybe more popular music could mean success. In the summer of 1983 this seemed very reasonable as New Wave had become acceptable and even old Punks (without those still thinking it was 1977) thought it was time to dance again on the volcano.

Gabi, originally Spanish, shows a nice mix of electronics and Latin Lover, very seductive. I liked it very much then and was glad to find it in a bargain bin by the end of 83. Unfortunately this was only the Cassette version, but the sound is ok. As usual this was recorded as mp3Pro, so do not be set off as it is only 96 kbps.

This is a special post dedicated to the fantastic Likedeeler, go and check out his site, he has a lot to offer!

He has been looking for this LP for a long time, although I am pretty sure that you can grab it at every flea market for 50 Cent. Whatever, here it is.

Markus was one of the first superstars of the NDW, propelled by the success of "Ich will Spass". Not much followed, except his appearance in the nice movie "Gib Gas, ich will Spass" with Nena, where they had a nice "steamy" scene together. "Kleine Taschenlampe brenn'" is still a very fine song, although the version featured on the LP is not with Nena, sob....

Unfortunately there is another flaw with this recording. The last track "Schön sind wir sowieso", which is my favorite, didn't want to be recorded. Although the surface of the record looks perfect, it skipped all the time and I have tried it several times! So sorry, but anybody who has a copy of this is welcome to send it to me, so I can update the track.

This is a concert recording I have very fond memories of. I had to go to Hamburg for a medical examination after my motorcycle accident. I found some nice records that day, the Glaxo Babies , Dexy's, The Cure and Depeche Mode. To top this there was a concert by ABC in town that night. Unfortunately I didn't have a ticket. Nevertheless I went there, although it was sold out. I actually found someone who had been let down by his date and gave me a ticket and even for free!

There were even some "celebrities" there: I saw Diedrich Diederichsen and Kid P., how much further can you get for a kid from the villages, THOSE were heroes in the 80s : People that had problems asking Tina for a date, but mocking about the german voice of Jerry Lewis (it was Georg Thomalla if you might want to ask. There must be this famous soundbite where Kid P. (Andreas Banaski) asks for George SSomalla (or did he just listen to this being asked?)

Anyway : Kid P. war immer grosszügig!

I really enjoyed the night, had a fantastic seat on the balcony right in the middle and later that concert was on the radio as you get it here now. There is a comment, that it wasn't THAT fantastic, soundwise, possibly it was because he had third row seats . The sound at the evening was not that bad on the balcony, but the radio recording is very good!

As I promised yesterday here is a (or rather the other) famous band from Düsseldorf, Kraftwerk can take it.

This is ZK.

A punk band with little experience on their instruments, but the will to perform. They really started the sub-genre of Fun-Punk, later completely and fantastically occupied by Die Ärzte! They only released two singles and two LPs and here you get the Lps, unfortunately I don't own the singles.

And you can find the third single by Die Toten Hosen, the band that grew from ZK on 7 inch Punk. You have to search on the site, cause somehow the direct link doesn't want to duplicate. Probably it may not be online anymore and I did not make copy...

I remember, the church where hey shot the video for Bommerlunder had to be re-consecrated after the shooting, featuring Fassbinder performer Kurt Raab.

A special version is here for you! They somehow contacted Rap Star Fab Five Freddy and made him adding his skills to their work. I do not know who did what, but the result is special. Back in the days it sounded ok, because Hip-Hop was not yet so widely known, but today it sounds a little odd, yet still feet-moving! Back then I made a remix with two tape recorders, but unfortunately I can't find the tape... (in the meantime I did. You can hear the result here.)The spelling mistake is original!

Fuck it! Destroy the prices! Put everything online! Give artists state funding or welfare, so everybody can enjoy art!

Looking at my last posts, you find some live recordings and here is another one, recorded in May 1982 (I think). The event were the "Münchener Rocktage" (Munich Rock days) with several german New Wave bands. I recorded this from the radio, but on a cheap tape, sound is ok.
Liaisons Dangereuses play their classic "Los ninos del parque", Die Krupps bang on steel and (mainly) synths for "Goldfinger" and "Wahre Arbeit wahrer Lohn".

Peter Hein & Family 5 played in public for the first time. A Latin version of the Fehlfarben classic "Es geht voran" and "Muff Gruff" show him in a angry mood, ranting about how bad Fehlfarben were and how bad the NDW-bands that went to the charts were...
Two songs each by Trio "Yaya", "Los Paul!" and Östro 430 "16!, "Ich bin ganz normal".

Side two of the tape was taken by short sets by bands from Hannover: Der moderne Man "Blaue Matrosen, Der Sandman, Am Baggersee, Gurus und Geheimagenten, Bis ans Ende der Welt, Gib mir den Tod", Mythen in Tüten "Liebe im Funkhaus, Sansibar, Die neue Kollektion" and Bärchen & die Milchbubis "Motorrad, Jung kaputt spart Altersheime, Tagebuch, Ich will nix älter werden, Tiefseefisch, Ich will meinen Spass zurück, Pogo liebt dich".
The last two songs on the Tape were by Abwärts, but you can find their set here .< br />

Sorry for neglecting my blog in the last weeks, but there were other things to be done, like tidying up my mp3 collection! Many people put stuff online without using the id3 tags or using different formats than I prefer, so a lot of typing had to be done (I'm still not through!).

I just wanted to up my Abwärts Live tape from Munich 1982 when I saw this. You will find a great compendium on a great view of NDW, not just Nena, nor Markus.
The Abwärts tape is (I think) from autumn 82 in the Alabamahalle, München.

Now I have to tell you about a fantastic young group that also comes from Lüchow-Dannenberg like myself.
They use loud guitars, not my favorite, but they use them to accompany strong melodies, that is great!
They produced some fine singles, one or two albums and you should buy anything by them! They have the energy!
The video features some nice places from my past!
Unfortunately, youtube dropped the video. Does anybody have the MTV feature on Madsen???? Just send me a mail, the adress is in my profile.

If you see a yellow X you know you are back home! Protesting against nuclear dump!
I visited my parents on 4.11.06 (directly before more of the dreaded Castors loaded with nuclear waste were to be dumped in my home) and it was really scary to see all the police with helicopters and stuff invade a normally peaceful region!! They were everywhere!

As you could already read in my post for the release party for the
Greatest Hits of the Süddeutsche Zeitung series 1000 Songs , I am a great fan of the german entertainer Bernd Begemann .

This Live CD gives a very good overview for new listeners. The man alone with his guitar rocking the crowd, everybody singing along having a great time!

As I can't post in the next week here is something different, german popular music from the 30's and early 40's. Most songs are from movies from the UFA, the major studio in Germany. Many of the songs sound like everything was fun at the time, but you can not forget, that most jewish artists had to escape or were killed. Take the
Comedian Harmonists as an example. Formed in 1927 as a unique vocal ensemble and, after worldwide success, had to stop working in the original lineup after they were banned in Germany in 1934. The jewish members went to the USA and reformed with new members, the non-jewish did the same under the name 'Meistersextett'.
Some of the songs here were clearly propaganda and perseverence slogans, for example 'Ich weiss es wird einmal ein Wunder geschehen' (I know a miracle will happen) by Zarah Leander. But there also many nice love songs, novelty numbers, enjoy!

This is a very special post, different from every other series of posts I care about at the moment. The Angry Flowers were a band from Göttingen, that liked the Sixties, to say the least. One of them was Matthias Hanich, the brother of one of my classmates. I think he played bass and sang. Together with Heiko I visited Matt in London, or should I say Tooting Bec. We slept in a student's dormitory where most students went home during holidays, except for the kids from abroad. As Matt could not get a license to let us live there for a few days, he had to bribe the porter and still every loud noise was a sign to crawl under the bunks! And it worked! I had one situation when the cleaning woman wanted to clean under the bed in the next room (where I was) and someone talked her out of that because a group of school kids had arrived at that moment! The Go-Betweens and the TV Personalities were more than an influence, and so they created two nice Pop songs! And he showed us Dan Treacy's house! See this old post .

A few years earlier there was another band (actually they had the Grace Kelly theme two years earlier) and they made a fortune!!! And they earn every cent of it!!! Writing songs about Teddy-bears and Teenager Love and still being hardcore (kind of...), and lots of fun, that's it! And still today! Die Ärzte (www.bademeister.com)
I heart Die Ärzte! Since 1984 when I caught some remote airwaves from SFB from Berlin on my radio in Lüchow-Dannenberg, it worked only when the weather was right. They had won a contest of the Berlin Senat with Teenagerliebe and also my heart. Later they could be seen on the cover of BRAVO, Germany's No. 1 teen mag (they just turned 50!) and on some funny "New Wave" Magazines on german TV on Sundays around 11.30, driving on escalators in the Europa-Center, also on this show was a very young and punk Blixa Bargeld, reporting from his hole under an Autobahn bridge, completely the opposite of the bohemian old fart he is now!
Who remembers Nina Schultz, the presenter? or was it Schulz? I think she later became a model and was shown in THE FACE around the mid-eighties a few times and was very nice to look at, kind of MM for the eighties.

Östro 430 were an all-female band I first heard on John Peel's music on BFBS. He also liked them a lot. Nice songs with not so nice lyrics sometimes...

For a change here is some german music from the 90s, rather the 00s again, following the Lassie Singers. Great Pop songs played with a guitar and verve, compare to Bernd Begemann.
I first heard of Space Kelly in 1995 through the mailorder company Malibu, lost but not forgotten... They offered a one-sided 7" by a then unkown to me called Space Kelly on Heribert Fassbinder. He was a very prominent sports commentator SK obviously did not like, he wanted to hang him from the stairs... I made a C-45 of it and it was played at The Funzel in Braunschweig during the 96 EM.

The Lassie Singers are not 80s New Wave but of course they were alive and already working then ! I like them a lot so this is reason enough to post this! Fantastic melodies and hooks, great lyrics, what more do you need for POP heaven?
Their breakthrough happened in 1991 when this became a standard in the FUNZEL in Braunschweig. One of their best songs was "Loswerden" (Get rid of..) on the second LP.

This is what WIKIPEDIA has to say about Die Lassie Singers :
Die Lassie Singers waren eine 1988 gegründete und 1998 aufgelöste Pop-Band aus Berlin, die sich musikalisch ungefähr zwischen Neue Deutschen Welle und der Hamburger Schule einordnen lässt. Gründungsmitglieder waren Christiane Rösinger, Almut Klotz und Funny van Dannen, der allerdings der Band nur kurze Zeit fest angehörte. Zeitweilig arbeiteten die Lassie Singers mit verschiedenen Größen aus dem deutschsprachigen Pop zusammen. Dazu gehörten u.a. Bernd Begemann, King Rocko Schamoni,F.J. Krüger Ideal) und Jochen Distelmeyer (Blumfeld).

This LP by der Plan was the soundtrack to a Rainer Kirberg movie. Very Twenties Expressionist. I remember seeing it on TV in the early 80s, pretty strange but fascinating. In that time there were some projects on German TV on new music. There was a two part documentary in 81 even my music teacher taped and later showed it to the class, resulting in a Referat by my on German New Wave (it wasn't NDW then).

I first heard songs from Bärchen on the No Fun package tour of 1981. I have a nice tape from Munich, with also Family Five, Mythen in Tüten, Liaisons Dangereuses, Krupps +++

Unfortunately tracks 6 + 8 are missing.
